Coffeehouses and Baked Goods

A mere ten years ago Sedona had no espresso bar or quality coffeehouse. Along came Gene and Sally’s Sedona Coffeehouse in Uptown, the first stand-alone business for great pastries and high-test caffeine. The scene is much different now with over ten coffeehouses filling the daily coffee needs of residents and visitors alike. It’s a scene, alright, one I enjoy immensely every day and every way that I can. Get a seat early one morning and watch the show. Sit outside to meet and greet your new best friends for a dose of Sedona local color.

In the late 1980’s Gene and Sally opened the first stand-alone coffeehouse in modern Sedona. The Sedona Coffeehouse located in a little nook uptown was an important coffee, baked goods, and super sandwich spot that attracted locals and visitors alike. It operated for 9 years until sidewalk and planter design (since corrected) by the city disastrously detoured walking traffic away from their door. They decided to close shop and concentrate on their famous recipe for Espresso Cake. Like a coffee cake, but buttery-better, their secret formula creates an unbelievable delicacy that is shipped worldwide to loyal customers. Gene is a master baker, up at 4 AM to get the goods going. At their old location, they also run a unique shop, On The Porch, that offers an eclectic mix of Airedale chairs, made-to-look-old furniture, and bird feeders. I was one of their first Espresso Cake guinea pigs back in the early days and I can honestly tell you that it’s as addictive as chocolate. Try it warm with your favorite gourmet ice cream on top. Heaven.

Andrea Blaut creates cake masterpieces. Check out her website, which is beautifully organized and designed, and enjoy her cake “series”: the Romance Series, the Whimsical Series, the Elopement Series, and quite a few more. If you look at her “Acclaim” page you’ll discover that she has been saluted in many magazines and newspapers over the years as a chef extraordinaire. I like the looks of Tom Cruise’s 40th birthday cake that Andrea created although her Signature Cake, a creamy vanilla cheesecake and flourless dark chocolate cake filled with chocolate mousse and topped with raspberries could easily become my favorite.

Sedona Fudge Company
Uptown
928.282.1044 – 800.845.3303

Mackinac Island’s famous 1887 recipe fudge and Grandma Horr’s cookies, a family recipe since 1949. Did you know that chocolate is a vegetable? Yep, cacao beans and sugar (made from sugar cane or beets) = vegetable! Now you can really enjoy....and remember, if you feel stressed, it’s the perfect remedy because “stressed” spelled backwards is “desserts”. My daughter Jamaica worked here as a teenager. I’d stop by to say hi and watch her stir and turn the fudge on the massive marble table. A few samples were in order of course. The scent from the Fudge Company pervades this block in uptown Sedona and acts like a magnet to unsuspecting passers-by. It’s almost hilarious to watch its hypnotic effect as visitors walk by, turn around, and enter the store with a hint of salivation. Don’t laugh. If could happen to you.

The Village really scored when Desert Flour Bakery moved from West Sedona to its new location on Hwy 179. I’ve known the folks at the Flour since the week it opened and chef Mona is a personal friend of mine. Stop by and meet the locals who know where to get the goodies in VOC. This is a favorite hangout for the early morning coffee crowd and their homemade pastries will please any palate. My lunch time favorites? The enormous ¾ pound ground sirloin burger. Yikes.

Miss the familiar taste of Manhattan bagels? Stop here and you’ll want no longer. Russ, the owner and head baker, has been taking care of business in Sedona for over five years. Baking all products on site, the N.Y. Bagel crew does it all: bagels, muffins, rugalach, pastries, and pies. Lunch time deli delights include subs, soups, sandwiches, N.Y. style hot dogs (think Nathan’s) and cheesecake. They also do wedding cakes and catering for any event. Challah is available on Fridays. This new location is perfect for a healthy breakfast, lunch snack, coffee break while reading the paper, and viewing the amazing collection of black & white photos of New York City that cover almost every available inch of the walls. As my New York visitors confirmed on a recent visit, Russ’s crumb cake pastries are as good as they get…..anywhere.

Java Love is the local favorite in far West Sedona and caters to a interesting mix of artists, business people, internet freaks, tourists, and coffee addicts. Originally started in the early 1990s as Jimmy Jean's Sedona Coffee Roasters, this is a pleasant place to hang out and sample hearty coffee, mix with local thinkers and artists, and sit outside to watch west Sedona action. It’s the only coffeehouse in town that roasts its own coffee and ships worldwide to bean lovers who sampled the goods while visiting Sedona and want to keep the connection. They offer a breakfast and lunch menu to cater to the local crowd and have a nice selection of bagels and pastries as well. Sit indoor and watch the ebb and flow of colorful patrons or find a table outside in the shade to spend some time on your laptop writing your next novel. In cooler weather the front patio is packed from morning until closing with local residents sharing the latest news, gossip, and tasty Java Love treats. An excellent place to start your Sedona day.
